Built Green/LEED Comparison Report

Session Description:

In 2008 King County and the City of Seattle partnered to develop a report comparing the certification programs of Built Green of King and Snohomish Counties with the USGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Each panel member was involved in the development of the report and will discuss findings on: equivalent rating levels, the energy savings associated certification levels and strengths and weaknesses of each program.

Bios:

Jonathan Heller has worked at Ecotope since 1986 providing design, research, and consulting on energy and resource efficiency in buildings and has played the role of lead mechanical engineer for Ecotope since 1997. He has specialized knowledge and experience with passive solar design, super insulation, heat recovery technologies, innovative mechanical system designs, rainwater harvesting, and alternative energy systems. Mr. Heller served 4 years on the US Green Building Council's Energy and Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group.

Sandra Mallory is the Program Manager for City Green Building, Seattle's green building program within the Department of Planning and Development. She leads the team to develop the programs and policies that will make green building standard practice in Seattle. Work has included implementation of a Priority Green permitting process, development of code to encourage deconstruction, and overall technical assistance and resource development. In addition, she is overseeing multiple research projects, including: the cost of green in both market rate and affordable multi-family housing; tracking the environmental benefits of green rated projects; and comparing the energy reduction impacts, compared to code, of different green building rating systems.

Koben Calhoun is the Program Manager for Built Green of King and Snohomish Counties. He is responsible for leading Built Green's certification process, grant programs, educational offerings, and external communication. Koben has engaged in several research projects on behalf of Built Green, including market research projects and database development. Koben is also a board member of the Sustainable Development Task Force of Snohomish County and the Partnership for Water Conservation.
